About This Site.
Welcome to Eat Your Urn! I'm so glad you're here. My name is Isabella Doyle, and I am a writer who is passionate about meaning-making and enacting social change through rhetorical communication. I am trained in marketing and communications, as well as in professional and public writing.
The title of this website,"Eat Your Urn" is a direct reference to Home Is Where's the whaler, which is the piece I am choosing to analyze for this project. the whaler is a deeply personal piece of Queer narrative that resonates strongly with me, and it became the subject of my research almost out of sheer coincidence. Having been 1) already interested in the alternative music genre and 2) actively seeking out Queer narratives, conducting research and a close analysis on this album seemed like the logical next step.
This project was partially developed out of necessity- A combined Liberal Arts and Humanities course I took while in college required a multimodal seminar project connecting illness narratives to a larger social issue. Having just read Trans: A Memoir by Juliet Jacques, I was deeply inspired to connect my love for music with my larger goal of amplifying Trans and Queer voices. Throughout the course of this project, I have used these goals to guide my research and project development:
-
How can music function as a narrative? An illness narrative?
-
How does Bea MacDonald’s own illness narrative influence the lyrics, style, and tone of the whaler?
-
How does artistic expression serve as a conduit for discussions about the queer experience?
Long-term, I hope to expand this website into a running catalogue of Queer music, musicians, and alternative culture- something others can add to, be inspired by, and learn from. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments, and to submit your own narratives!
