Recommended Listening and Links to Research

Here, I have compiled a Spotify playlist influenced by Juliet Jacques' proclivity for discussing music in the context of her personal illness narrative. In this playlist you will find queer and transgender artists, boundary-pushing alternative anthems, and narratives that inspire me to live unapologetically. I hope you enjoy!

I also highly recommend reading this blog post with Juliet Jacques' annotated playlist for Trans here!

For Further Reading

Here, I have compiled a list of additional sources for further research into the topic of music as an illness narrative, queer narratives in music, and gender identity. I have also compiled some additional illness narratives relating to the queer experience.

1/ Angels in America

This is, in my mind, one of the most important intersections of illness narrative and Queer identity. The plotline focuses on the experiences of gay men in the midst of the AIDS crisis, and deals with complex issues with humor, raw dialogue, and compassion. I prefer the 2017 Andrew Garfield production of this play.

2 / Repo! The Genetic Opera

In a post-apocalyptic 2056, nearly every ailment imaginable can be cured, and an insidious corporation controls who benefits. Health comes at a steep price; if you can't pay, the cure is repossessed. This cult favorite musical film provides highly stylized (and unmistakably gory) commentary on corporate greed, physical and mental illness, and class structures.

3 / Jennifer's Body

A classic Queer retelling of a classic demonic possession trope. This movie can also be read as an illness narrative- as Jennifer's body and mind reflect her illness she has to learn how to control and react to the reality of being in a monstrous body. This movie also explores the issues of bodily autonomy, sexuality, gendered power dynamics, and metaphorically illustrates the traumas of teenage girlhood.

4/ I Saw The TV Glow

An otherworldly journey exploring queer adolescence, fandom, friendships, and family. The soundtrack for this movie perfectly encapsulates this narrative as a period piece, and features many important Queer anthems.
